What we will do

• After leaving the port, we get ready for this thrilling tour of the city of Mangalore by getting on an “Auto Rickshaw” also known as Tuk-Tuk, a picturesque three-wheeled taxi which is a very popular means of transport in India.
• We start our Tuk-Tuk tour by visiting a cashew nut processing facility.
• The processing of this type of dried fruit is considered one of the city’s main activities.
• Mangalore in fact exports 75% of the coffee and cashew nuts produced in India to various countries such as the US, Canada and Europe.
• We continue our tour with a rice processing facility.
• Rice is a very popular ingredient and a staple food in southern India.
• Most Indian dishes use rice as a base.
• During our visit, we will also learn about the process starting in paddies and ending with rice production.
• It is a rather simple yet interesting procedure that is worth learning about.
• We will then head to the local market, where we can find different types of fish, flowers and other typical regional products.
• Before going back, we have the chance to try some local cuisine with a restaurant lunch.
• Afterwards, out Tuk-Tuk will take us back to the port.

JAIN TEMPLE TOUR

What we will see

• Karkala, 42 foot high Monolithic statue of Bahubali

What we will do

• The first stop would be Karkala to visit the 42 foot high Monolithic statue of Bahubali, a Jain saint, situated atop of hillock.
• Later we visit Dr. Soan’s Farm – which has developed over years as a centre for innovative agriculture. We will get a chance to take a tour of the farm and see different tropical fruits and spices which they use in their diet but don’t get the chance to see as they grow on the actual plants.
• Later we proceed to visit the 15th Century thousand pillared temple at Moodbidiri where it is believed that no two pillars are alike & then drive back to the pier.

What we will do

• The Shri Manjunatha Shiva Temple at Kadri is one of the ancient temple of Mangalore. It has a Bronze statue of Lord Shiva which is believed to be the oldest in South India. It has got 9 water Tanks situated above the temple level.
• Further we visit Aloysius Chapel – famous for its breathtaking paintings and frescoes adorning the walls and ceilings. The Chapel was built in the year 1899-1900. The walls of the Chapel are covered with the paintings of the artist Antony Moshaini of Italy.
• We move to Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple. This is dedicated to Lord Shiva built in the Chola style. Temple has white marble flooring.
• You will also visit a Cashew Factory and a local market on this tour. Upon completion of the tour, you will return to the pier to board the ship enroute a brief shopping halt.

• We start the tour with a visit to the 1000-pillared temple at Moodbidri followed by a visit to Karkala Gomateshwara Temple, where stands the 42-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, a Jain Saint.
• Thereafter we visit Dr. Soans Farm for lunch.
• After lunch, we proceed to Udupi, a divine shrine in the coastal region of the State of Karnataka. Situated about 60 Kms from Mangalore, it is a fairly large and upcoming town that was the sanctum of Madhvacharya, the great Sanskrit philosopher. The famous temple here has a fascinating idol of Lord Krishna which was installed by the great saint Madhvacharya and which is richly adorned with jewels. Another attraction of this temple is the ‘Kanakana Kindi’ -a small window through which Krishna is believed to have given darshan to his ardent devotee, Kanakadasa. There are 3 main temples in Udupi: Chandreshwara, Anantheshwara &Sri Krishna temple. Chandreshwara and Anatheshwara are the most ancient temples of Udupi.
• Later drive back to pier.

• We begin our excursion to the city of Kochi with a visit to the Mattancherry district, where we can admire the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1555 and renovated by the Dutch in 1663.
• We then go down Jew Street with its typical houses and shops of various kinds, from grocers to antiques sellers.
• Our next stop is in the district where the first settlers were Portuguese: Fort Kochi, home to various vestiges of the colonial era, such as St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India, which houses the tombs of various important Portuguese and Dutch figures.
• Continuing our visit we admire many more attractions, including the Indo-Portuguese Museum where a collection of Portuguese Christian artworks is held, the Chinese fishing nets, a powerful symbol of the centuries-old Chinese influence on this coast and the local fish market.
• Towards the end of our day in Kochi we visit the Santa Cruz Basilica whose foundations were laid in 1505, again by the Portuguese.
• It is now time for a truly evocative experience: at the Brunton Boatyard Hotel we will board a vessel for a cruise in the port, an opportunity to watch the fishermen at work and admire the islands of Vallarpadam, Gundu and Bolghatty, offering a glimpse of the local way of life.

• We travel from the port to the village of Kumbalangi, the starting point for our enchanting cruise, which offers an opportunity to observe the various local fishing techniques including veesuvala and padal.
• After leaving the boat we head for the village, where we are divided into small groups to watch the locals going about their day to day business: catching crabs and fish, preparing coconut milk punch, processing shellfish and coconut fibres, weaving rugs and oola madayal (special coconut leaves woven to create a roof covering), and making fishing nets.
• For lunch we enjoy local specialities in an open-air area with a view of the Chinese fishing nets resting on the surface of the water. We can see the way these nets are used and how the fishing system known as papu mari works.
• Such an exciting day would not be complete without a Kolkali performance, a traditional dance in which the dancers move in a circle, singing and dancing and tapping each other with sticks.
• And that is not all: after the performance we enjoy a brief rickshaw ride through the narrow streets of the village
• Our trip has come to an end and we return to Kochi, travelling through spectacular countryside with backwaters and fish farms on either side of the road.

• We then visit many more fascinating attractions, including the Chinese fishing nets, a powerful symbol of the centuries-old Chinese influence on this coast and the famous local fish market where locals eat freshly caught fish that has just been cooked.
• We then go on to visit Santa Cruz Basilica whose foundations were laid in 1505, again by the Portuguese.
• Arriving at the Mattancherry district we can admire the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1555 and renovated by the Dutch in 1663. The building is renowned for the frescoes featuring scenes from the Ramayana and the Puranas legends linked to Hindu gods.
• Another community that has left its mark on this city is the Jewish community, which has a street named in its honour. Here we admire the typical houses and the shops of various kinds, from grocers to antiques shops. At the end of the street is the Synagogue, the oldest in the entire Commonwealth. It was built in 1568 and is famous for its hand-painted blue Cantonese majolica tiles.

• We start by visiting two important churches in Old Goa, which are testament not only to its colonial past but also to the city’s grandeur and wealth during the period of Portuguese rule: firstly, Se Cathedral, which is dedicated to Saint Catherine and is one of the largest in the city, secondly, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which was built by the Jesuits in the 16th century and is home to the remains of Saint Francis Xavier. These are kept in a marble mausoleum and displayed to the public once every ten years.
• After visiting the churches, we head to the famous Shri Nageshi Temple, which is dedicated to the gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. It clearly retains the Hindu style that was at its peak in the 18th century.
• And now for some relaxation! We head to the Beach Hotel where we can make the most of a delicious buffet and then relax with a swim in the pool, head to the beach or simply lie back and soak up the sun!
